I can confirm that the issue is comparable in scope and resolveability
to an Emacs vs. Vi debate. I've been through the debate before... the
issues are cultural, and based on the mailing tools people commonly use
in different cultures, i.e. Pico vs. Outlook. They didn't make the same
choices about what to call their various (R)eply buttons and functions.
So it is as much an argument about "my mail tool is better than your
mail tool" as what the abstract behavior of a mailing list ideally
should be.
Let us avoid these waters.
