Ah-ha!

uncle-jesse# limit
cputime         unlimited
filesize        unlimited
datasize        2097148 kbytes
stacksize       8192 kbytes
coredumpsize    unlimited
descriptors     64 
memorysize      unlimited

...that would be the culprit.  I'll change it to 128 and see if that
helps.  Thanks to all who replied.
