Aren't all the traffic counts held against the real interface rather than
the virtual ones? Certainly looking at the output from netstat -i on one
of our machines, the counts for all the virtual interfaces are zero (and I
know these interfaces are used).
# netstat -i
Name Mtu Net/Dest Address Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Collis Queue
lo0 8232 loopback localhost 656979 0 656979 0 0 0
hme0 1500 spade spade 247701749 1 222208029 0 0 0
hme0:1 1500 spade1 spade1 0 0 0 0 0 0
hme0:2 1500 spade2 spade2 0 0 0 0 0 0
