Yes, this would be good to try.  Normally, I would recommend using the
ActiveState Perl, but you've got Solaris 2.5.1, which is older than the
supported 2.6 that their Perl is compiled under.

The other solution is to grab Perl and gcc from

http://www.sunfreeware.com/

which has binaries for Solaris 2.5.
